I never EVER read reviews. Music is so personal that they won't leave me any the wiser as to whether I'll like something or not.
Aren't most reviews people who can't get work in their chosen profession anyway? |

In many cases yes, that or collage / uni tutors. You get these young teachers who know "everything" because they worked in industry. Truth is many couldn't hack it or just weren't good enough. Why else would they be in a fairly poor paid jod telling you theirs great jobs out their that will make you lots I knew one once, we pulled his leg all the time

| Honestly, I love reading the Pitchfork reviews. They're absolutely hilarious. The reason I love Electric Six is for all the things their reviewers seem to hate. It makes me feel magical. |

Reviews are only one person's opinions of an album. I've seen great reviews of albums that I haven't liked and visa versa. The only true way to know is to judge yourself. _________________ I'd like a telephone conversation. Let's talk about things we'd like to do. Like release the track.

I wouldn't say that's necessarily true. I go on a site called RYM and there's not a lot of that which goes on with the reviews. You do get some abysmal stuff like someone rating a record out of 5 for every track, saying unhelpful statements like "this album is good, go buy it now" or not really explaining the sound of a record at all but there are some very well written reviews on there that link into personal experiences the people have had with a record and ones that put stuff into the context of when it was made and how it influenced the sound behind the record.
| Quote: | | I found I was only reading the reviews of albums I already had just to get mad if they disagreed. I decided this was a waste of time. |
I only really get mad at reviews like that where somebody seems to be missing what I view to be the point of it. For example, if somebody said that Angel Dust by Faith No More was 'shouty metal bollocks' then I'd take up issue with that because it spans a lot more genres than that and frankly is writing it off quite harshly.
You can still find a wonderful review that has been written by somebody who dislikes an album and appreciate where they're coming from with it. I once read a review of Blink 182's Dude Ranch written by a guy who is double my age (and a bit more) and said that this humour was now lost on him now that he was older and since his ears had been witness to more deeper music and I thought that it's a fair comment to make.
| Quote: | | My use of music magazines has dwindled to looking at the photos and pulling out the free CDs. Although there are still a few good ones out there I read, mostly for the interviews. These days I mostly use technorati to search for blog posts about live shows. |
Aye, interviews are where it's at in music magazines for me too. It's great for those moments where you're interested in a band and want to get to know the people behind the music a bit more.
But, anyway, music journalism has been a profession that has interested me quite a lot. I do understand the people who dislike it and want to make their own minds up about a record (personally, I think I'm quite good at dividing their opinions up with my own opinions) but I see it to be of use to people who want to know what they're dealing with. Same in other entertainment mediums.
Edit: Just realised I've bumped up a post from about 2006/07. This is what happens when you're used to traversing forums where posts are made so many times a day. Haha, sorry . |

I don't think we have any rules about old post bumping...
If we did, it'd be stupid because there's only about three of us here and we need as much fresh discussion as possible :p _________________ HEY good looking with your helmet on,

if we're talking about reviews... it was one or two years ago, when I read a review for "A Natural Death" by HORSE the Band. It was a german review and I try to find it from time to time, because it was so incredibly bad. It was like the worst review ever. The guy in the review expressed that he liked the CD but actually failed miserably at giving any insights except "oh LOLZ they're using nintendo-sounds".
That guy talked way more about video-games than about the actual music.
But if you want, I can give also my opinion on how to make out a good album. |

I actually liked that album. Sex Raptor and Murder are excellent songs. |
